Challenges and benefits of implementing downstream processing intensification strategies.
With its partner Sartorius, LFB BIOMANUFACTURING organised a workshop on 6 October 2023 on the theme “Challenges and benefits of implementing downstream processing intensification strategies”.
During this workshop, LFB and Sartorius teams discussed strategies for scaling up downstream processing with experts in the field. After a quick introduction to innovative downstream technologies (MCC, RCC, SPTFF, connected processing), groups were formed to discuss different topics. Industry experts shared experiences on the maturity of technologies for implementation, user experience, challenges, viral validation and quality assurance strategies.
Modern plants today are designed to quickly and flexibly manufacture multiple products. This requires that the upstream processes be intensified in order to obtain higher protein titres, and the combination of these two factors creates a need for intensification of downstream processes as well. There are several ways to intensify purification steps, such as via multi-column chromatography (MCC), rapid cycling chromatography (RCC), multi-step chromatography (MSC), and single-pass tangential flow filtration (SPTFF).
They can be used in “batch” or “continuous” mode. In order to choose the right intensification strategy, the target throughput of the facility and the number of products to be processed must be assessed.
